NSE was established in 1992, and its primary role in economic policymaking is mediated through its CEO.

Role of the CEO of Stock Exchanges:
The primary role of a Stock Exchange is to facilitate and regulate the transfer of funds and securities between investors and businesses. The CEO of a stock exchange, belonging to its governing body, has complete jurisdiction over the various functions of the stock exchange. The role broadly comprises the ensuring liquidity of capital at all times, listing and distribution of various securities providing a huge platform for raising capital for companies as well as public debt. They are also involved in maintaining and regulating the ingenuity and transparency of business information and management of its member companies, such as financial statements, annual reports, etc. The stock exchanges take responsibility for the influx of foreign capital and investments in general, thus serving as a barometer of the national economy.

Vikram Lamaye joined as the CEO of the NSE in the midst of a controversial Co-Location Scam. His major role since appointment has been mitigating the effect of the scam, and resolution of the scam. After the ruling of the case in 2019, the NSE has been looking at a Rs.1000 crore fine and a six month ban from fundraising. Under his term, the NSE entered the Commodity Derivatives segment.
